Levitra Professional: The Facts
Levitra Professional is a prescription medication used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). It belongs to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5 inhibitors), which are used to treat conditions such as pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).
Levitra Professional is not for everyone. Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions and allergies, and all the medications you are taking, including non-prescription medications, vitamins, and supplements.
Do not take Levitra Professional if you are also using a nitrate drug for chest pain or heart problems. This includes nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate, and isosorbide mononitrate. Nitrates come as tablets, sublingual (under the tongue) tablets, sprays, patches, pastes, ointments, creams, suppositories, and injections. Ask your doctor if you are not sure whether any of your medications contain nitrates.
Do not take Levitra Professional if you have had a heart attack, stroke, or life-threatening irregular heartbeat within the past 6 months. Do not take Levitra Professional if you have certain heart conditions such as heart failure, angina (chest pain), or other heart conditions that make sexual activity unsafe.
Levitra Professional may cause serious side effects. See your doctor right away if you experience any of the following serious side effects:
- chest pain or heavy feeling, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, general ill feeling;
- irregular heartbeat;
- swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet;
- shortness of breath;
- vision changes;
- feeling light-headed, fainting; or
- penis erection that is painful or lasts 4 hours or longer.
Levitra Professional may also cause other side effects. Call your doctor if you have any unusual problems while taking this medication.
What is Levitra Professional?

Levitra Professional is available in tablet form and is taken orally. It is available in three strengths: 2.5 mg, 5 mg, and 10 mg. The recommended starting dose is 10 mg. If you are taking certain other medications, your doctor may start you at a lower dose.
Levitra Professional should be taken as needed, about 60 minutes before sexual activity. It can be taken with or without food.
Levitra Professional may be taken with or without food. If you miss a dose of Levitra Professional, take it as soon as you remember.
Do not take more than one dose of Levitra Professional in a 24-hour period.
Call your doctor if you miss a dose of Levitra Professional and you still intend to engage in sexual activity.
Before taking Levitra Professional
Some medical conditions may interact with Levitra Professional. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:
- if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
- if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
- if you have a history of heart problems (eg, angina, aortic stenosis, heart failure, irregular heartbeat), stroke, or blood vessel problems
- if you have a history of high or low blood pressure, kidney problems, liver problems, bleeding problems, blood cell problems (eg, sickle cell anemia, leukemia, multiple myeloma), or any other type of cancer
- if you have a history of stomach or intestinal ulcers
- if you have a history of vision problems, including a rare inherited eye disease called retinitis pigmentosa
- if you have a history of stroke, blood clotting problems, or bleeding problems
- if you have a history of seizures
- if you have a history of diabetes
- if you have a history of penile surgery or trauma
- if you have a history of Peyronie disease or prolonged erections
- if you have a history of liver or kidney problems, dialysis, or you are on a low-dose dialysis (HD) schedule
Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Levitra Professional. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:
- Alpha-blockers (eg, doxazosin), medicines for high blood pressure, nitrates (eg, isosorbide, nitroglycerin), or nitroprusside because severe low blood pressure with dizziness, lightheadedness, and fainting may occur
- Azole antifungals (eg, itraconazole, ketoconazole), H2 antagonists (eg, cimetidine), HIV protease inhibitors (eg, ritonavir, saquinavir), macrolide antibiotics (eg, erythromycin), or telithromycin because they may increase the risk of Levitra Professional's side effects
- Bosentan or rifampin because they may decrease Levitra Professional's effectiveness
- Carbamazepine, phenobarbital, or phenytoin because they may decrease Levitra Professional's effectiveness
- Certain medicines for heart problems (eg, amlodipine, angiotensin II receptor blockers [ARB], metoprolol, simvastatin) or blood pressure because the risk of low blood pressure and fainting may be increased
- Clarithromycin, erythromycin, or telithromycin because they may increase the risk of Levitra Professional's side effects
