Prednisone is a medication that is used to treat a variety of conditions. These conditions include arthritis, blood disorders, breathing problems, severe allergies, skin diseases, cancer, eye problems, and immune system disorders. Prednisone is a corticosteroid (steroid) that works by decreasing the activity of the immune system. This effect helps to decrease inflammation (swelling and irritation) in the body.
Prednisone is available as an oral tablet, an oral solution, an injectable solution, and a topical cream. The oral tablet is available in three strengths: 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg. The oral solution is available in two strengths: 5 mg/5 mL and 10 mg/5 mL. The injectable solution is available in one strength: 25 mg/mL. The topical cream is available in one strength: 0.5%.
Prednisone is usually taken with food or milk to prevent stomach upset. The oral tablet and oral solution are taken one to four times a day. The injectable solution is taken one to three times a week. The topical cream is applied to the skin two to four times a day.
Prednisone can be harmful to the liver and should be used with caution in people with liver disease. Prednisone may also increase the risk of developing osteoporosis. This effect is more likely in women and people who take high doses of prednisone for long periods of time.
Prednisone may interact with other medications. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. Prednisone should be used only when prescribed. Do not take this medication in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
