What is Synthroid? Synthroid (levothyroxine) is a replacement for a hormone that is normally produced by your thyroid gland to regulate the body's energy and metabolism. Levothyroxine is given when the thyroid does not produce enough of this hormone on its own. Synthroid is used to treat hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone). Synthroid is also used to treat or prevent goiter (enlarged thyroid gland), which can be caused by hormone imbalances, radiation treatment, surgery, or cancer. Synthroid should not be used to treat obesity or weight problems. Important information Synthroid can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while you are using this medicine. Do not give this medication to a child without medical advice. Synthroid is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old. How should I take Synthroid? Take Synthroid exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose. Use the medicine exactly as directed. Synthroid is usually taken by mouth on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes to 1 hour before breakfast. If you have trouble swallowing the tablet whole, you may crush the tablet and mix it with water. Drink the mixture within 30 minutes. Do not use Synthroid if you have untreated or uncontrolled adrenal gland problems, a heart attack, thyrotoxicosis, or an uncontrolled adrenal gland tumor. Do not use Synthroid if you have had a recent heart attack. To make sure Synthroid is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had: a blood clotting disorder; diabetes (your dose of diabetes medicine may need to be changed); a pituitary gland tumor; problems with your adrenal glands; a history of cancer; if you have recently had a heart attack; or if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Do not give this medicine to a child without medical advice. Your dose needs may be different during pregnancy or while you are breast-feeding. Older adults may need a lower dose of this medicine.
