What is Plaquenil? Plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine) is an antimalarial medication used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites, which enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Plaquenil is also used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. Plaquenil is available in generic form. What are the possible side effects of hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil)? Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Taking hydroxychloroquine long-term or at high doses may cause irreversible damage to the retina of your eye. Stop taking hydroxychloroquine and call your doctor at once if you have trouble focusing, if you see light streaks or flashes in your vision, or if you notice any swelling or color changes in your eyes. Call your doctor at once if you have: blurred vision, vision problems, or seeing halos around lights; pale skin, easy bruising or bleeding; fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms, sores in your mouth and throat; unusual bleeding (bruises, blood in your urine or stools); swelling in your legs; shortness of breath; a seizure (convulsions); or muscle weakness, tenderness, or wasting. Hydroxychloroquine can pass into breast milk and may cause side effects in the nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding. Do not give this medication to anyone under 18 years old. How should I take hydroxychloroquine? Take hydroxychloroquine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Hydroxychloroquine is sometimes given only once per week. Choose the same day each week to take this medicine if you are on a weekly dosing schedule. Take hydroxychloroquine with a meal or glass of milk. To prevent malaria: Start taking the medicine 2 weeks before entering an area where malaria is common. Continue taking hydroxychloroquine as directed by your doctor for 4 to 8 weeks after you leave the area. To treat malaria: Hydroxychloroquine is usually given for 3 days, starting with one high dose followed by a smaller dose during the next 2 days in a row. Take this medicine for the full prescribed length of time for malaria. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared. When treating lupus or arthritis, tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve. Take hydroxychloroquine with food or milk. Swallow the tablet whole. Do not crush, chew, or break an extended-release tablet. Doing so can release all of the drug at once, increasing the risk of side effects. To take hydroxychloroquine for rheumatoid arthritis, you should take four 250-milligram tablets once per week. This dose should be reduced by half after one to two months. If you are taking hydroxychloroquine for lupus, you should take four 200-milligram tablets once or twice per day. This dose should be increased by four tablets once or twice per day every two weeks until a maintenance dose of eight tablets per day is reached. Maintenance dose: Eight tablets per day, taken as four 200-milligram tablets once or twice per day. To prevent malaria while traveling in an area where malaria is common, take hydroxychloroquine for 8 weeks before you leave, during your stay, and for 8 weeks after you return home. Follow your doctor's instructions. Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
